Urban Renewal Lesson Plan

I will be teaching them first about the basic concept on what Urban Renewal is. I will be using many different projects around New York and other states to show them the downside of Urban Renewal but also the positive and why it’s happening. I’ll show them a few examples and get them involved with the presentation by asking them some questions on why they think this may need to happen or why it shouldn’t and just start a little conversation going with them. After this I plan to give them a little lesson on some communities affected by Urban Renewal and show them that we need to be considerate and careful on the communities and neighborhoods we want to renew because we don’t know the history behind it. After this I’ll start with my activity which basically is a map of a little community/city and I’ll have a bunch of cutouts of buildings you would normally see in a community such as a hospital, police station, grocery store, and much more and I’ll ask the class where they think everything should go and ask them why it should go there. I don’t really have anything else after that because I don’t know if I want to do it as one big class or it should be individual so everyone can express there ideas and imagination so they can have fun.
