Ceramic Reflection (work in progress)

I chose a Japanese style of mending ceramics called kintsugi as my ceramics project. I wanted to show my anxiety through this piece with the broken ceramic put back together. After sketching out a few ideas, I practiced making a bowl on the wheel for the ceramic base of my project. Then after firing, I threw my bowl outside, glued most of it back together with glue, and added gold leaf to the mended parts. Overall, I feel good about this piece because I was able to re-learn how to make a bowl on the wheel, which I have been wanting to do for a while now. I mostly like the way the gold leaf turned out; however, some of the gold stuck to spots I didn’t want it to. Figuring out the best technique for glueing the gold onto the piece was challenging, but I was able to learn a new skill. My favourite part of this project was smashing my bowl because I didn’t know how it was going to turn out. If someone were looking at my piece, they would learn that something happened in my life that I have been working through and have been mending with time.
