I used Unsplash models for each of my sketches and used mostly a 2b pencil with darker pencils afterwards for the shadows. I also used a grid to help with the scale and placement of the features. It was really fun to create them, and almost meditative. I feel like I learned a lot about perspective and face shadows and got better at drawing portraits. The self portrait was also fun to do, and much different from anything I’ve done before. I’d never used charcoal, never drawn my face, and never drawn on such a large scale. I think it was a great learning experience where I got to step out of my comfort zone and create something new.

I think this is my favorite thing I created this summer. I made this with a lighter pencil and didn’t use a lot of value, which is something I’m working on, but I think I really captured what the model looks like.

This is my least favorite sketch of the summer. This was my first attempt at semi-realistic hair, and I don’t love how it turned out. However, I had fun creating it, and I feel like my self portrait shows that I got a lot better at drawing hair.

I branched out for this sketch and did an animal, and it was really fun. The trunk was my favorite part to make and I used a 6b pencil for a lot of the shadows, which helped me work on adding darker values.

This little girl is so cute in the picture and I think I replicated her pose pretty well. I branched out again for this piece, because it was more about drawing a body than the face. Overall, I really like this piece, even though it is a little simpler than my other sketches.

I love this baby and I think I did well drawing him. The hair was a little tricky since it was so much darker than the rest of the photo, but it was fun to create and it made for a cute result.

This lady was pretty hard to draw since the photo was so close up, but I like the end result. She looks very peaceful, and her expression is similar to how it was in her photo, which means I was able to recreate her well.

This one was really scary to draw because it was on a huge paper and it is a picture of myself. I also used charcoal for the first time, but I learned that it is a really good medium for portraits. This is definitely one of my favorite pieces from the summer.
