How much did you know about drawing portraits before we started? Not much
What process did you go through to produce this piece? I began by taking some refrence photos, then projecting them onto the wall and tracing the photo onto a piece of cardboard. I outlined it with pencil then began adding value with vine charcoal. I darkened my hair and hoodie, added shading to my face, and some of my hands. Then when I got my hands on compressed charcoal i increased the darkness on my hair and hoodie and some of the darker areas, then i shaded the backround too.
In what ways have you gotten better at this kind of work? In what ways can you improve? I think i improved my shading and understanding of value, but I think i can improve on details
How do you feel about this piece of work? What parts of it do you particularly like? Dislike? Why? What did/do you enjoy about this piece or work? I like my drawing, i think the shading on the face was good, but i could have improved the hands and some other tiny details.
Did you do your work the way other people did theirs? In what ways did you do it differently? In what ways was your work or process similar? Some other people put more white on their drawings but i kept mine mostly just black grey and the cardboard color.
What’s the one thing that you have seen in your classmates’ work or process that you would like to try in your next piece? Add white so it looks more like the reference photo
How do artists create detailed portraits expressing the personality of the person that is drawn? They use a mirror, or that little poke hole thing, to trace their subjects face/likeness onto their paper.
