Notions of Home

My Inspiration for this piece was the transition from childhood to adolescence, the bittersweet feeling of being too big for the things you once enjoyed as a child. The more childish aspects like the pattern of her pajamas and glow in the dark stars on the ceiling form a contrast with the figure’s gray countenance. If I had more time I would like to add some posters to the walls and paint something on the outside of the house.

The biggest challenge I encountered with this piece was the creation of the figure. At first I wanted her to be 3D and I attempted to sculpt her out of modeling clay with a wire and tinfoil skeleton, but this didn’t seem right to me. I then attempted to sculpt her out of fireable clay and was going to try to reattach her limbs in the tucked position with string like an old fashioned doll. I still think this would have been an interesting approach, however, this endeavor took too much time and I didn’t think the position would turn out right if her limbs were tied. Ultimately I decided to draw her because I realized that was going to be the best way to make my vision a reality.
I really liked this project because the concept of home and what that means to me is something I think about a lot. This project tied together concepts from both 2D art and 3D art, and I hope to gain more experience with 3D art in the future.
