Death Mask
I chose to make a mask for my four cats that have passed away in the last few years. I combined their faces to make one whole cat. The most challenging part of this project was sculpting the face, especially the eyes. I used different clay techniques like slipping and scoring, and I used modelling tools to make the eyes. My favourite part of this assignment was glazing it because I was able to bring to life the colours of my cats and show the differences between them.
During class, no one really “critiqued” others’ work, but if I were to critique myself I would just continue working and getting a basic idea of everything before adding too much detail. I have almost finished 1/4 of my mask, and I started another quarter today. I was struggling with one of the eyes, which is why I haven’t made much progress. I was using a needle tool for most of my detailing work, but now I am also using another tool that carves away/details.
